How to Create Video Categories & Tags That Rank
Categories, tags and performer pages are where most tube traffic lands. Done well, they rank for the terms people actually search. Done badly, they become thousands of near-empty pages that drag the whole site down.
Three levels, three jobs
| Level | Job | How many |
|---|---|---|
| Categories | Main navigation; broad terms (“MILF”, “POV”, “Trans”) | 20-60 |
| Tags | Specific attributes (“tattooed”, “shower”, “glasses”) | Hundreds, only with enough videos each |
| Performers | Names people search | As many as you have verified names for |
Rules that keep hubs strong
- Minimum size. Don’t publish a tag page until it has enough videos to be useful (we use a threshold and keep smaller tags unlinked and out of the sitemap). Never raise the threshold so far that pages that already rank disappear.
- One name per concept. “Big tits”, “bigtits”, “big boobs” and “huge tits” should be one hub, with the others redirecting.
- An introduction per hub. Two or three original sentences describing what’s there. It gives search engines something unique to rank.
- Count per site. If you run several sites from one database, a hub should only show (and count) videos that live on that site, or it ends up empty or duplicated.
- Empty hubs return 404, not an empty page with HTTP 200.
Cleaning up a tag flood
Imports from scraped sources create tag floods. One of our imports turned scraped keyword lists into about 1,600 junk categories overnight. How we fixed it without losing traffic:
- List every hub with its video count and its search traffic (impressions/clicks in Search Console and Yandex).
- Keep hubs that rank or have enough videos.
- For deleted hubs that search engines had already crawled, return 301 to the closest real hub, or 410 Gone if there’s no sensible target.
- Fix the importer so it maps incoming tags to your existing list instead of creating new ones.
Performer pages
Performer names are some of the most searched terms in adult. Only create a performer page when the identity is certain; wrong matches (a database matching the wrong person to a scene) put wrong names on hundreds of videos. Add a short bio line, aliases, and link the page from every video they’re in.
Navigation
Show categories in a menu or a dedicated categories page, not as a strip of tags above your video grid. Visitors came for videos; put the grid first. Add an A-Z index of categories and performers so crawlers can reach every hub.
