Yandex for Adult Sites: Why It Sends Us More Search Traffic Than Google
Most adult webmasters set up Google Search Console on day one and never open Yandex Webmaster. For our sites that would have been a mistake. Over the past months, Google sent our tubes very little apart from people searching our brand names. Yandex grew steadily: from roughly 550 clicks a week across the network in September to about 1,200 non-brand clicks a week by late October — people finding us through searches for content, not our names.
This guide covers why Yandex matters for adult sites, how to set it up, and the problems we ran into.
Why Yandex treats adult sites differently
- Adult results are normal results. With its family filter off (the default for many users), Yandex shows adult sites for adult queries without the heavy filtering Google applies to new sites in this niche.
- It’s not only Russia. Yandex is used across Russia, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Belarus and by many people elsewhere who switched for less filtered results. On our sites, Yandex visitors came in large numbers to Turkish and Russian pages.
- It crawls deep pages. Google barely crawled our hub and video pages; YandexBot crawled them steadily and quickly started sending visitors to performer and tag pages.
Setting up Yandex Webmaster
- Add the site at webmaster.yandex.com and verify it (meta tag, file or DNS). Add the https version.
- Submit your sitemap index. Yandex remembers every child sitemap it has ever seen; if you later remove one, it keeps reporting “errors in sitemaps” until those old URLs answer with a valid (even empty) sitemap. We had to serve empty sitemaps at removed addresses to clear that warning.
- Set the region if your site targets one country; leave it unset for an international site.
- Check Diagnostics weekly. It’s where Yandex tells you about slow responses, sitemap errors and mobile problems.
The recrawl API and IndexNow
Yandex Webmaster has an API with a recrawl queue: you can submit a daily quota of URLs per site (in our case about 150) to be crawled soon. We submit new and updated hub pages every day: new tags, performer pages that gained videos, translated hubs. Yandex also supports IndexNow, which notifies Yandex and Bing about changed URLs in one request. Our IndexNow guide covers the setup and the shared-quota trap.
Prioritise hub pages over single videos in both: they’re what ranks.
The “slow site” flag that lingers
Yandex flags sites whose average response time is too high, and the flag stays in Diagnostics long after you’ve fixed the cause. We got it from translated pages that took several seconds to build when not cached. After the fix, YandexBot was getting answers in 0.02–0.05 seconds, and the flag still sat there for weeks; there’s no button to re-check. Fix the cause, confirm in your own logs what YandexBot gets, and wait.
To check: filter your access log for YandexBot and look at response times. If more than a sliver of requests take over 3 seconds, Yandex will notice.
Outages hit Yandex harder
When one of our servers ran out of disk space and went down for 18 hours, YandexBot stopped crawling the whole network at the minute the outage started and took days to ramp back up. Visitors from Yandex dropped by about two thirds on one site in the meantime. Google barely noticed. Keeping the server healthy is part of Yandex SEO; see protecting your server’s disk and database.
Translated pages: Yandex’s favourite
A large share of our Yandex visitors land on translated pages, especially Turkish and Russian performer and tag pages. Few adult sites offer those in good quality, so competition is thin. If you run a multilingual site, Yandex is where it pays first; our guide to multi-language adult sites and hreflang covers the setup.
What doesn’t work
- Testing from a different IP than your server. Some Yandex services stopped answering our server’s IP for a while; routing around it through other connections only confuses the picture. Use the official API from your server, and if it fails, wait and check status pages rather than hammering it.
- Expecting Google’s rules. Yandex weighs behavioural signals (do visitors stay?) heavily. A fast page that answers the search beats keyword tricks.
Checklist
- Verify the site in Yandex Webmaster and submit the sitemap index.
- Submit new hub pages daily via the recrawl API or IndexNow.
- Check YandexBot response times in your logs; keep them under a second.
- Read Diagnostics weekly; fix sitemap errors at old URLs too.
- If you translate, start with Turkish and Russian hubs.

Frequently asked questions
Does Yandex index adult websites?
Yes. Yandex indexes and ranks adult sites normally and shows them for adult queries when the family filter is off, which makes it one of the best search engines for new adult sites.
How do I get Yandex to crawl my site faster?
Submit your sitemap in Yandex Webmaster, send new URLs through the recrawl API or IndexNow every day, and keep response times for YandexBot well under a second.
Why does Yandex say my site is slow when it is fast?
The slow-response flag is based on past measurements and can stay for weeks after a fix. Check YandexBot’s response times in your own access logs; if they are fast, wait for the flag to clear.
